The fortified citadel of Kuelap is the most important archaeological site in the northern Peruvian Andes. It forms an architectural stone complex characterized by its monumentality, with a large artificial platform seated on the Cerro Barreta, at 3,000 meters above sea level. The platform extends for 600 m and is enclosed by a wall that in some points reaches 10 m in height. In its interior there are circular buildings of the Chachapoya and some rectangular ones of Inca origin.

They are unique for their extraordinary height, up to 2.50 meters, and careful elaboration. They were found in the Karajía ravine in 1985, located on a cliff of difficult access that kept them safe from looters.

The Quiocta Cavern has become the first illuminated cavern in Peru. Contemplate the impressive stalactites and stalagmites that have been sculpted by nature over millions of years. REVASH, LEYMEBAMBA AND THE MUSEUM OF MUMMIES

The Revash mausoleums are a necropolis belonging to the Chachapoya culture. They were collective sepulchers that occupy natural caves or excavated in the rocky wall of an imposing ravine. They could be replicas of the houses where the people of the area lived. The mausoleums can be reached through San Bartolo, a town that preserves the traditional construction with log houses or ‘notches’.

The Mummy Museum of Leymebamba was created to house the collection of mummies found in the Laguna de los Cóndores in the nineties, although it is dedicated to the Chachapoya culture and archeology as a whole. It has five rooms, three of archeology, one of ethnography and one of divulgation. The museum collection has 261 mummies and more than 200 funerary goods.

THE SPATULE-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD

The spatuletail hummingbird or marvelous hummingbird (Loddigesia mirabilis) is a medium-sized hummingbird (up to 15 cm) with blue, green and copper colors and a violet crest. Its most outstanding feature is the presence in the male of two long tail feathers that cross each other and end in large blue-violet discs or spatulas, which can move independently. Its tail is twice its height.

Due to the constant loss of its habitat, its small population and limited range, the spatuletail hummingbird is evaluated within the Red List of Threatened Species. This bird is endemic (exclusive) to the Utcubamba River basin and for this reason birdwatchers from all over the world visit us every year.

The Spatule-tailed Hummingbird Refuge is located in the Cajuache Creek, near Gocta Lodge, and in its gardens with flowers and feeders we will be able to observe this and other species of hummingbirds. The Cajuache creek has pools for a refreshing swim on sunny days.
